The Waterford Early Reading Program (WERP) provides individualized computer-based reading instruction using state-of-the art technology. Children enter kindergarten with a wide range of pre-literacy skills. WERP efficiently tailors instruction by adjusting to varying needs of students and encourages independent learning in a risk-free environment. With a comprehensive data-collection system for assessing student progress, WERP allows teachers to assess individual student performance and class trends. This information enables teachers to structure their lessons more strategically. Due to the relatively high cost of a typical WERP configuration, Rx for Reading continues to seek additional funding in order to offer this grant more widely and affordably. Since 2002, Rx for Reading has provided 196 WERP workstations to 15 elementary schools.

Rx for Reading funds WERP as a challenge grant in select districts. WERP grants include computer hardware, WERP software, installation, warranty, WERP training, and take-home student materials including books, videos, and tapes. This grant is available by invitation-only to K-2 classrooms in Los Angeles County.
