RRMG Eligibility and Application Information

To be eligible for the 2011-12 Recreational Reading Mini-Grant, schools must meet the following criteria:

  • Only K-5 teachers within Los Angeles County may apply.
  • Public Schools: at least 75% of students at the school must qualify for free or reduced lunch.
  • Parochial Schools: must be designated a level 8, 9, or 10.
  • Applicant must NOT have received a Recreational Reading Mini-Grant in 2011.

In order to be considered for the grant, teachers must return a completed application, including booklist to The Riordan Foundation by November 30, 2011. Grants are reviewed and awarded while funding is available, and we encourage you to submit your application as early as possible. Incomplete, plagiarized or ineligible applications will be disqualified without prior notice. Due to the high volume of requests, The Riordan Foundation will not send notifications of receipt or declination. We ask that you please DO NOT call the office to inquire about the status of your application. Winners will be posted to our website on Friday, January 6, 2012. Books will be shipped to teachers at winning schools within six weeks of the date of award notification.

Rules and Regulations:

  • AT LEAST 50 of the requested books must be hardcover. Only 20% of books may be non-English.
  • Books must be housed in classrooms, not school libraries.
  • Acquired books are not the property of the applicant teacher and must remain within the grade level of the classroom for which they were originally purchased, even if the initial teacher moves grades and/or schools.
  • Students must be free to borrow books to take home, though an official lending system is not required.
  • Funds are for recreational reading material ONLY, booklists that apply for textbooks and/or books that will be used as part of a formal reading curriculum (such as class sets) will be disqualified.
  • Classrooms with 15 or fewer students are eligible for $500 grants.
  • Although all applications will be considered, a maximum of two teachers will be selected from each school that applies.
